Samsung has recently unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, its thinnest and lightest foldables yet in their respective categories. Today, the company has shared how it got here and what made all that possible.

The company says it’s pursued the goal of giving users large screens in a pocket-friendly device ever since 2019 and the first Galaxy Fold. The screens have gotten bigger, the phones thinner and lighter over the years – the Flip7’s battery is denser, thus packing 300 mAh more while being thinner. The phone itself is 6.5mm thin when open and 13.7mm thick when closed, and inside there’s an ultra-high-density circuit board which “makes sure there is no wasted space internally”.
The Galaxy Z Fold7 is almost half the thickness of the original Galaxy Fold, while having a wider, brighter screen and a new 21:9 aspect ratio for the cover display. Its third-generation Armor FlexHinge is 27% thinner and 43% lighter than the Fold6‘s. There are thinner critical rotating and supporting elements which make the hinge smaller while maintaining its strength, and new alloy components that increase yield strength by over 14% to allow it to better withstand repeated folding.
Separate supporting and rotating functions add structural stability, and a wing plate that opens wider delivers a flatter screen with less of a crease.
The Flip7 actually incorporates Samsung’s thinnest FlexHinge yet, which is 29% slimmer than the one in the Flip6. The Flip7 also has the unique edge-to-edge Infinity Cover Display, and display bezels that have shrunk from 3.94mm to just 1.25mm, making the Flip7 have the thinnest bezels of any foldable device ever.
The Fold7’s screen is 39% thinner, while the Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) on top is 50% thicker than in the Fold6, “for a smoother, less-visible crease and improved performance”. The Fold7 has the first 200 MP main camera in a foldable, made possible by a complete structural redesign. The Fold7’s cover screen now features Corning’s Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, and the frame and hinge cover have been upgraded to Advanced Armor Aluminum, which is 10% tougher than the Armor Aluminum used in the Fold6.
