Google Drive adds Google Vids integration for quick video edits

Google Drive has been getting increasingly friendlier towards video uploads lately. Recently, Google added automatic captioning, a visual redesign, instant playback for newly-uploaded videos, time-stamped transcripts and even YouTube-like thumbnail previews to its cloud storage platform.

The newest addition is Google Vids integration. Users of eligible Workspace domains will soon start seeing a purple Google Vids icon in the top right corner when a video is open in Drive. Clicking it will load said video into Google Vids and allow it to be trimmed, enriched with media content like music, additional text overlays, and more. Google Vids offers fairly basic editing tools, but it does have the benefit of doing so entirely in the cloud. Once editing is done, a new Vids file is created, so you do have to save or export your work separately. Perhaps Google can make that process a bit more seamless by offering in-place editing in the future.

There are some limitations to the new integration. It only works on MP4, QuickTime, OGG and WebM videos that are shorter than 35 minutes and less than 4GB in size. Also, as mentioned, you shouldn’t expect to see the new integration of your free Google Drive account. Instead, the eligible Workspace domains are:

  • Business Starter, Standard, and Plus

  • Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus

  • Essentials Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus

  • Nonprofits

  • Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on

  • Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers

  • Customers who previously purchased Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons

Users of these can expect to start seeing the integration within the next 15 days. Of course, the feature will work best on desktop, but theoretically, even mobile browsers should be able to pull off some quick edits with enough eye-squinting and precise tapping.
